To serve the local
My name is Liliana Hernandez, I was born in
California, moved to Idaho when I was about fourteen, graduated with a class of
forty-five. I am a current member of ONE and O.E.L.A. (Organization of Latin
American Students). O.E.L.A. is a group of undergraduate students that help
around the community informing minorities of the opportunities that college has
to offer. ONE is also a club, this club is a nationally recognized organization
that provided informational insight of not just community issues but also
raising awareness through informing the public.
ONE has helped me become aware of local and
national issues that can seem minor now but could have an impact on society. Advocating
things like world hunger and vaccination in Africa seems to be our next club
goal.
The members of OELA, have been some of my closest
friends freshmen year, we all have different backgrounds, and different majors.
Graduating from such a small class I felt a little overwhelmed coming to Boise
State University, however; joining this small group of people has geared me
toward becoming more of a leader and a learner. Being part of this Club has
changes my perspective on education, being the minority can be intimidating,
but what I have learned are some amazing communication and leadership skills
that can be beneficial. A project that is done every year is DFT, (Dream for
Tomorrow) where we as a club bring high school students to tour the campus and
get informed of opportunities. This last year’s numbers of students that
participated was the most that we have had, it was a great experience. Thought the project I learned to speak and guide a group
of students.
My contribution to the group has currently been to
contribute ideas for upcoming fundraisers. In the upcoming elections I plan to
run as an officer, and hopefully I get the position. The friends that I met
here in both groups are amazing, and we all hope to keep DFT running for a long
time.
